Mathematics and Social Science within 1st Grade's Inquiry into Play

Grade 1 has been inquiring into how people play as our inaugural IB unit. Each student in our class crafted a survey question about some aspect of play that they are interested in (e.g. Do you prefer to play inside or outside? Do you like to build with blocks? Do you play with dolls? etc.). The first grade mathematicians then graphed and analyzed their data. Here's one example:

We then hypothesized how that data might look if we asked our same questions to Mr. Ferbrache's first graders. Just this afternoon both classes got together to survey each other so that we can assess those hypotheses next week. Here's a glimpse into a classroom full of 29 inquisitive first graders!
